HighSpark Ignition Coils for the Lexus IS F: What They Do, Who They're For, and What to Skip
Here's the short answer. If your IS F still has its original coils, a HighSpark kit is a straightforward upgrade. You get a spark that's 2 to 2.5 times stronger than stock, sharper throttle response, and a smoother, more stable engine. You won't get a big power number. The power gain is minimal, and I'd rather tell you that now than have you find out on a dyno.
The IS F is also the car that buys more HighSpark kits from us than any other. When we ranked every HighSpark kit sold through HS Coil USA and our sister store, modinjapan.com, the North American master distributor of HighSpark, the IS F came out on top by revenue and by units. The Standard IS F kit is our single best-selling HighSpark product.
So let's keep this simple. What is it, why does it matter on an IS F, how do you pick the right kit, and what mistakes should you avoid?
The kits in this article: - HighSpark Ignition Coil Upgrade Kit for Lexus IS F 5.0L (2008-2014), SKU HS-LEXUSIS-F-0814-8P: view on HS Coil USA - HighSpark Premium Ignition Coil Upgrade Kit for Lexus IS F 5.0L (2008-2014), SKU HS-LEXUSPIS-F-0814-8P: view on HS Coil USA
What is it?
It's a full set of replacement ignition coils for the IS F's 5.0-liter V8. The coil takes low voltage and turns it into the high voltage that jumps the spark plug gap. A HighSpark coil does that job harder than the factory part.
Here's what the HighSpark kit changes compared with the factory coils, based on HighSpark's product information:
- Stronger spark. Spark output is 2 to 2.5 times more powerful than an OEM ignition coil.
- Higher voltage. Peak voltage is 15 kV, compared with about 10 kV for the OEM coil. TR Imports UK, HighSpark's European distributor, adds that HighSpark reaches over 15 kV even at idle, roughly double a stock coil.
- Sharper throttle response. The stronger spark increases engine responsiveness and improves throttle response.
- More stable engine. HighSpark stabilizes the constant voltage from the coil, so the engine runs smooth and consistent.
- Smoother starts. The kit reduces engine jerk at start and restart.
- Better heat resistance. German copper wire fused with Japanese Kyocera resin holds up better to heat. That matters when the coils sit on top of a hot V8.
- Built for hard use. HighSpark lists drag racing, road racing and drifting as ideal uses.
That's the whole list. No magic, just a stronger, steadier spark.
Why does it matter on an IS F?
Because every IS F is old now. They were built from 2008 to 2014. The newest one is more than ten years old, and plenty of them still run their original coils.
TR Imports explains the problem well. Direct-type ignition coils, the kind that mount right on the engine, are "constantly exposed to the high heat of the engine and also have high voltage flowing through them, so they begin to deteriorate rapidly after about 30,000 to 40,000 km, and their performance gradually decreases and they wear out." On a V8 packed into a compact engine bay, that heat doesn't go away.
TR Imports also lists what a weak spark can affect: combustion, fuel efficiency, carbon build-up, starting, engine vibration, response and power.
The catch is that coils don't usually die all at once. They fade. The car feels a little less crisp each year, and you get used to it. That's why a lot of owners don't think about coils until something goes wrong.
HighSpark's approach is to replace coils before that decline, the way you'd replace spark plugs. And when you do, you upgrade to a stronger spark and sharper throttle response instead of just putting back what the factory had.
What you'll feel, and what you won't
Let me be straight about power. Better combustion efficiency can bring a small increase in horsepower and low-speed torque, but that gain is minimal. If you're chasing a big dyno number, a coil isn't the part for that.
What IS F owners actually notice is how the engine feels. A stronger spark, crisper response, and a smoother, more stable engine from start-up through everyday driving. That's the real upgrade.
The jerky-coil problem, and why HighSpark doesn't have it
Here's something that doesn't work well in the real world: some high-output coils make a car feel abrupt at low speed. Great on paper, annoying in traffic.
TR Imports says HighSpark has worked on "the negative points that are common with reinforced coils (especially the jerky feeling when starting and turning the accelerator on and off)." So you get the stronger spark and smoother starts without the car feeling twitchy. On an IS F that still gets driven every day, that matters more than any spec on the box.
How do you pick the right kit?
There are two HighSpark kits for the IS F. Both are a real upgrade over stock, with the stronger spark and better throttle response. The difference is how you drive.
Standard kit (HS-LEXUSIS-F-0814-8P)
HighSpark's product information says the Standard kit is for street use with occasional track driving. That covers most IS F owners: the daily driver, the weekend canyon car, the car that sees a track day once in a while. It's our best-selling HighSpark product for a reason.
Premium kit (HS-LEXUSPIS-F-0814-8P)
The Premium kit is meant for heavy track use. HighSpark's product information says it's designed to maintain higher voltage at high RPM.
Here's the reasoning in plain English. With ignition coils, raising voltage and raising response normally work against each other. Higher voltage usually means a shorter spark duration. HighSpark says its Premium tier uses its own technology so the spark duration doesn't shorten as voltage rises. It raises voltage from idle while keeping torque and improving response.
The fast way to decide
- Street car with the occasional track day? Get the Standard kit.
- Regular track days, heavy loads or lots of high-RPM driving? Look at the Premium kit.
That's it. Don't overthink it. If you're stuck between the two, contact our team before you order and tell us how you drive. We'll point you to the right one.
Getting the most out of it
Do the plugs at the same time
A coil can only deliver its spark through the plug. TR Imports recommends NGK RX spark plugs to get the most out of HighSpark's stronger spark, and NGK MAX if a compatible RX plug isn't available for your car.
If your IS F is due for plugs, do them with the coils. You're already in there. Doing it twice is just wasted time.
Optional: Noise Reduction Terminals
TR Imports lists an add-on called Noise Reduction Terminals for each HighSpark tier. They're designed to release static so the coils perform closer to their theoretical level. It's optional. The coils and plugs are the part that matters most.
What mistakes should you avoid?
These are the ones that come up most.
1. Expecting a power upgrade. I'll say it again because it's the biggest one. The horsepower and torque gain is minimal. Buy HighSpark for the stronger spark, the sharper throttle response and the smoother engine. If you want big power, that's a different part of the build.
2. Waiting for a coil to fail. Coils fade slowly. By the time one fails outright, the rest have usually been weak for a while. Replacing the set before that, the way you'd do plugs, is the whole idea behind HighSpark.
3. Skipping the obvious checks. If your IS F is running rough, don't jump straight to the complicated explanation. Check the simple stuff first. How old are the plugs? Are the coils original? Start there and eliminate one thing at a time. And if the problem isn't ignition, new coils won't fix it.
4. Buying Premium "just because." Premium is built for heavy track use and high RPM. If your car is a street car, Standard gives you the stronger spark and better throttle response you're after. Spend the difference somewhere else.
5. Buying from a random seller. According to TR Imports, all HighSpark products come with a 1-year / 30,000 km warranty when purchased through approved distributors. Japanese retailers also mention liability insurance on HighSpark products. Buy from an authorized seller like HS Coil USA so you're covered.
Who makes these coils?
HighSpark coils come from HighSpark Japan Co., Ltd. (株式会社ハイスパークジャパン), a Japanese company registered in Setagaya, Tokyo. Japanese corporate records list its business as manufacturing and selling automotive parts, including automotive coils.
Here's what the company and its authorized dealers say about how the coils are made:
- One company, start to finish. HighSpark describes itself as a specialist maker of tuning ignition coils that handles development, production and sales itself. It says that's how it delivers high quality at a lower price. Japanese dealer Wernher Inc. adds that because HighSpark Ignition Coil Japan manages development and production together, it can offer an outstanding value.
- In-house parts. Japanese dealer Avarth says HighSpark produces its internal modules, cases and suppressors as its own original parts.
- German wire, Japanese resin. HighSpark uses German magnet wire from the supplier with the world's top market share, the kind used in European carmakers' original coils. It uses a higher grade than those stock coils, because carmakers skip it for cost reasons. The resin that protects the heart of the coil is the kind made for Kyocera ignition coils. That combination is where the better heat resistance comes from.
- Tested on real roads. Avarth says HighSpark runs regular long-distance, long-duration road tests, from Tokyo city streets to the suburbs and highways.
What we can't tell you: the factory location is not published. HighSpark doesn't publicly state where its coils are assembled, so we're not going to guess. What we can confirm is that HighSpark is a Japanese company in Tokyo that develops and produces its own coils, using German magnet wire and Japanese Kyocera resin for better heat resistance.
Why the IS F leads our HighSpark sales
I think it comes down to four things:
- The cars are old enough to need coils. Every IS F is over a decade old. Many are past the point where TR Imports says direct coils start to weaken.
- Owners keep their cars. IS F owners hold onto them and keep improving them. A coil that brings back a stronger spark and crisp throttle response fits that.
- The V8 rewards a strong spark. Sharper response and a smoother, more stable engine are what people want from the 5.0-liter.
- The choice is simple. Standard for street, Premium for track.
Practical takeaways
- The main upgrade is feel, not power. A spark 2 to 2.5 times stronger than OEM, sharper throttle response, smoother starts and a more stable engine. The power gain is minimal.
- Original coils on a 10+ year old car are worth replacing. They fade slowly, so you probably won't notice until you swap them.
- Most owners should buy Standard. Go Premium only if you do regular track days or a lot of high-RPM driving.
- Do plugs at the same time. NGK RX if available, NGK MAX if not.
- Buy from an authorized seller so the 1-year / 30,000 km warranty applies.
- Not sure? Ask first. It's faster than returning the wrong kit.
